Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Expedition #1: The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. We hopped in a taxi van and ventured through the city to check out this gorgeous structure. Its meticulous detail can only be truly appreciated in person.

82 Different domes of 7 varying sizes

I can't recall how many pillars there are, but each one is inlaid with gorgeous stone designs.

It's all so symmetrical! The (free) audio tour guides were pretty informative about the outer and interior design.

On Fridays, this place is filled with people who gather for prayer. It's also busy during Eid. The courtyard is one of the largest marble mosaics in the world.

All designed with fancy stones that I don't the know the names of. But Jacqueline does! Amethyst seems to ring a bell...

This bad boy weighs several tons, and is equipped with a bajillion little lights. The bottom part can actually be lowered for cleaning purposes, and then there's a spiral staircase that goes up the cylindrical part in order to clean it. There were three in the main hall. This was the middle and largest one. Again, all about symmetry.

The 99 names of God (Allah)

Mecca is this way.

A clock indicating the various prayer times throughout the day.

It took 1000+ workers over a year to stitch together this magnificent looking carpet. Hope they got paid overtime for that.

In a nutshell, the Mosque is very purdy. Very purdy and very white. Blindingly white.
